Anton Dudley is a playwright, director, and librettist for both opera and musical theatre. His Off-Broadway productions include City Of (Playwrights Realm/Peter Jay Sharp Theater directed by Stephen Brackett), Substitution (Playwrights Realm/Soho Playhouse featuring Jan Maxwell), 17 Orchard Point (co-written with Stephanie DiMaggio, Theater Row featuring Michele Pawk), Getting Home (Second Stage Theater), and Slag Heap (Cherry Lane Theater featuring Vincent Kartheiser). Other productions include Girlstar (Signature Theater directed by Eric Shaeffer), A Dram of Drumhiccit (co-written with Arthur Kopit, LaJolla Playhouse directed by Chris Ashley), Katie: Strongest of the Strong [music by Faye Chiao] (Houston Grand Opera), Honor and the River (Walnut Street Theater, Luna Stage, Theater Row), Cold Hard Cash (Williamstown Theater Festival directed by May Adrales), The Lake’s End (Adirondack Theater Festival featuring Jason Butler Harner), Marguerite [music by Michael Cooper] (APAC featuring Cady Huffman), and Davy & Stu (Ensemble Studio Theater). His play Letters to the End of the World was a finalist for the 2012 Lambda Literary Award in LGBT Drama and received its premiere at Theater Row. Along with composer Faye Chiao, Anton had a two-year residence at Off-Broadway’s New Victory Theater to develop their musical Baba Yaga & the Firebird through LabWorks. His drag cabaret series, The Duchess Carpathia Bouffray, is currently streaming on HappiTV and has been presented by both Rogers Art Loft and the Gund Gallery. Anton has had new play, musical & opera commissions from Houston Grand Opera, Manhattan Theater Club, Williamstown Theater Festival, Cherry Lane Theater, Prospect Theater, Keen Company, Baryshnikov Arts Center, Zeiders American Dream Theater, Prospect Theater Company, Stella Adler Studio, and Toronto’s Musical Stage Company. His works are published by Sam French, Playscripts, Applause, Heuer, Heinemann Press, Backstage Books, Smith & Kraus, People.com, and Vintage. As a director, Anton has directed both premieres and classics across the country, including the D.C. regional premieres of Suzan-Lori Parks’ Venus, Miguel Pinero’s Short Eyes, and Tracy Letts’ Killer Joe, and the North American premiere of Jim Cartwright’s I Licked a Slag’s Deodorant. He was co-director for the 30th Anniversary revival of Hair, which won Helen Hayes Awards for both Outstanding Resident Musical and Direction. Anton received an Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award for fiscal year 2020 for his play Song of the Wind (developed at Irish Rep).
