John has enjoyed a twenty-three year collaboration with Larry Fessenden, having appeared in over a dozen films produced and/or directed through Larry’s New York-based indie label, Glass Eye Pix. These include Fessenden’s WENDIGO (as Otis, with Patricia Clarkson and Jake Weber), THE LAST WINTER (with Ron Perlman and James Le Gros), and as Pastor Francis in the upcoming BLACKOUT, starring Alex Hurt, Addison Timlin and Barbara Crampton. He appeared in Mickey Keating’s DARLING, and as a subway evangelist in Ana Asensio’s award-winning MOST BEAUTIFUL ISLAND, and plays a lead role opposite Fessenden, James Le Gros and Kevin Corrigan in the caper film STRAY BULLETS, directed by Jack Fessenden. Other Glass Eye Pix projects include Fessenden’s Frankenstein reboot, DEPRAVED, Joe Maggio’s BITTER FEAST (with Joshua Leonard), Ti West’s THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL, THE ROOST and THE INNKEEPERS (playing “Officer Mitchell” in the latter two films) and as Cornelius Murphy in Glenn McQuaid’s comedy/drama I SELL THE DEAD. John has performed in numerous episodes of McQuaid and Fessenden’s acclaimed horror radio anthology “Tales from Beyond the Pale”, including several live performances at Lincoln Center’s Walter Reade Theatre. He stars as Fred (the Butcher) in Fessenden’s webisode short STAKE LAND: ORIGINS, and as John Spinellie in Chris Skotchdopole’s upcoming comedy thriller CRUMB CATCHER.
Other film work includes: INSIDE MAN (dir. Spike Lee), FANTASTIC FOUR, CAYMAN WENT, RULES OF ENGAGEMENT (dir. William Friedkin), SCHOOL TIES, JERSEY GIRL, TOWN DIARY, and THE TRADE. John stars as Det. Flynn in Brad Wigor’s UNCONSCIOUS (with Benjamin Walker and Adam LeFevre), and as the diabolical Dr. Slovak opposite Graham Skipper and Lauren Ashley Carter in Joe Begos’ cult hit, THE MIND’S EYE. He also appears in the memorable FAO Schwarz scene of Raja Gosnell’s THE SMURFS, and stars as Oscar in Allen C. Gardner’s indie horror-comedy, COLD FEET.
Numerous television credits include recurring roles on Denis Leary’s Rescue Me, and work on Law & Order (including the series finale), Law & Order CI, and Law & Order SVU. Other recent credits include The CW’s Two Sentence Horror Stories, Bull, The Good Wife, Weekends at Bellevue (pilot), and a memorable scene with Tom Selleck as a corrupt cop in the Season One finale of CBS’s Blue Bloods.
John was directed by Sidney Lumet in 100 Centre Street, was a series regular on Oprah Winfrey’s Brewster Place and ABC’s Sirens, and played Buck in the CBS mini-series Return to Lonesome Dove alongside Ricky Schroder and Reese Witherspoon. Other TV roles include New York Undercover, The Education of Max Bickford, Queens Supreme, Far East (PBS), and recurring roles on daytime’s All My Children, and Comedy Central’s Onion SportsDome.
On stage, John twice worked with the legendary Arthur Miller: playing Happy in the National Tour of Death of a Salesman starring Hal Holbrook, and performing on Broadway in the Tony-winning revival of A View from the Bridge with Anthony LaPaglia and Allison Janney. Numerous off-Broadway productions include the lead in Paul Weitz’s All for One at E.S.T. with Liev Schreiber and Calista Flockhart, and The Vineyard Theatre’s Food and Shelter starring Philip Seymour Hoffman.
As a principal actor in more than thirty commercials, John has been directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, Sir Michael Lindsay-Hogg, and Penny Marshall, among many others.
A published poet, John’s work has appeared in print and on-line in numerous journals, magazines, and anthologies. He studied acting with Glenda Jackson and William Esper and has an MFA from Rutgers University.
