Bio:

Ethan Lipton’s produced plays include TUMACHO, RED-HANDED OTTER, LUTHER, GOODBYE APRIL HELLO MAY, 100 ASPECTS OF THE MOON, and MEAT. His musicals NO PLACE TO GO (Obie Award) and THE OUTER SPACE (Lortel nom.) were developed with his band, Ethan Lipton and his Orchestra, directed by Leigh Silverman, and produced by the Public in Joe’s Pub, and have toured to over 30 cities in the U.S. and Europe. Plays are published by Concorde Theatricals and Yale/Duke.

Ethan is the 2023 Kleban Prize winner for most promising American librettist and a 2023 Creative Capital Grantee. A Clubbed Thumb associate artist, Ethan has been a Guggenheim Fellow, an Alpert Prize Fellow at MacDowell, part of the Public Theater’s Emerging Writers Group, as well as a Space at Ryder Farm Fellow, an Orchard Project Resident, and the Playwrights Realm’s inaugural Page One Fellow. Ethan has received grants and commissions from the Public Theater, Media Arts Exploration, MTC, the Civilians, NYFA, Clubbed Thumb, Playwrights Horizons, True Love, Barrington Stage, the NY Public Library and the Onassis Foundation.  

With his band, Ethan has released five studio albums and played venues including SF Jazz, Lincoln Center, Celebrate Brooklyn, MASS MoCa, Pitchfork Paris, Theatre de la Ville, the Gate (London), the Pavilion (Dublin), and the Troubadour in LA. The band has been featured on NPR shows Weekend Edition, The World, and Soundcheck, as well as in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.  As a performer, Ethan has opened for indie rock band The National, originated the role of Klipspringer in ERS’ production of GATZ, appeared in Sondheim’s ASSASSINS at Encores!, and sung backup for Laurie Anderson.
